How to redesign a website without losing your SEO rankings

The fear is common and the underlying risk is real: businesses delay a badly-needed redesign because they've heard a story about someone's traffic collapsing after launch. It happens — but almost never because of the new design itself.

The actual cause is broken URL structure. If your old site had /services/teeth-whitening and the new one silently becomes /whitening, every backlink and every search result pointing at the old URL now leads to a 404 — unless every changed URL gets a proper 301 redirect to its new equivalent. This single step prevents most redesign-related ranking loss, and it's the step most often skipped under launch-day time pressure.

Second cause: lost content, not lost design. If a redesign drops the actual text content from a page — the paragraphs a search engine was indexing, not just the visual layout — that page loses the substance it was ranking for, no matter how good the new layout looks. A redesign should carry real content forward deliberately, not treat old copy as disposable along with the old design.

Third: page speed regression. A visually richer redesign that loads slower than the site it replaced can lose ranking ground on Core Web Vitals alone, independent of anything about the content or structure. This is exactly why real image and video compression is part of a proper build, not an afterthought — see our own homepage, which we recently cut from a 22MB hero video to under 3MB with no visible quality loss.

The actual redesign checklist that protects rankings: map every existing URL to its new equivalent before launch, redirect every one of them, preserve indexed content instead of discarding it, and verify Core Web Vitals on the new site before the old one goes offline — not after.

Done properly, a redesign should improve rankings over time, not risk them. The sites that lose ground did so from skipped technical steps, not from getting a better design.
