Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Squarespace for a small business store

If you are opening an online store, the platform decision feels bigger than it is. All three of the common options can take payments and ship products. The real difference is how much of the running of the store you want to do yourself, and what happens when you start selling more.

What is the short answer?

  • Choose Shopify if selling online is a core part of the business and you want the store itself to be reliable without technical upkeep.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you already run a WordPress site, want full control of the code and hosting, and have someone who can maintain it.
  • Choose Squarespace if you sell a small number of products alongside a mainly content or service-led website.

How does Shopify compare?

Shopify is a hosted platform built only for selling. Hosting, security and checkout are handled for you.

Strengths: a fast, trusted checkout; a large app store for reviews, subscriptions and email; solid inventory and shipping tools; and an admin that non-technical owners pick up quickly.

Trade-offs: you pay a monthly plan, and paid apps add up if you are not careful. Some features need an app rather than being built in, and deep customisation of the theme needs a developer who knows Shopify's templating language.

Best for: product businesses that want to grow online sales and do not want to think about servers.

How does WooCommerce compare?

WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into a store. You host it yourself.

Strengths: complete control over design, data and code; no platform fee on the plugin itself; and a natural fit if your content and blog already live on WordPress.

Trade-offs: you are responsible for hosting, security, backups and updates. Plugins can conflict, and a slow or poorly maintained store loses sales. The money saved on the platform often goes on maintenance.

Best for: businesses with a WordPress site and a developer on hand, or with requirements that hosted platforms cannot meet.

How does Squarespace compare?

Squarespace is a hosted website builder with commerce features added.

Strengths: polished templates, an easy editor, and a single subscription for site and store.

Trade-offs: fewer commerce features and integrations than Shopify, and less room to grow into complex catalogues, variants or wholesale.

Best for: service businesses, studios and creators who sell a handful of products or bookings on the side.

Which questions should decide it?

Answer these honestly and the choice usually makes itself:

  1. How many products, and how many variants? A few items are fine anywhere. Hundreds of products with sizes and colours point to Shopify or WooCommerce.
  2. Who will run the store day to day? If it is you, with no developer, a hosted platform saves you from updates and security work.
  3. Do you need subscriptions, wholesale or multiple currencies? Check that each one is supported, natively or through an app you trust, before you commit.
  4. What do you already have? Moving a working WordPress site to Shopify is a real project. So is the reverse.
  5. What are the full monthly costs? Add the plan, payment fees, paid apps and theme, not just the headline price.

What makes a small store actually sell?

The platform matters less than the basics, which work on all three:

  • Product pages with clear photos, honest descriptions, the price and the delivery time visible without scrolling.
  • Shipping costs shown before checkout, not as a surprise at the end.
  • A checkout with as few steps as possible.
  • Abandoned-cart emails switched on.
  • A store that loads quickly on a phone.

We build on Shopify for most small product businesses, because it lets the owner run the store without us. If that is where you are heading, Shopify store development covers setup, theme, payments, shipping and the apps worth installing. If you also want orders to flow into your accounts or CRM without copying them by hand, read Zapier vs Make vs GoHighLevel.
